This tutorial will show you how to add cheat files and load them with RetroArch on your hacked SNES Classic. You can add Game Genie & Action Replay cheat codes for many games and different consoles (SNES, NES, N64, etc.).

This tutorial is the same and works for both the SNES Classic Mini and NES Classic Mini.

  1. Incidentally, some games, like those on MAME and NeoGeo which were intended for arcade machines, may need an emulation of the coin slot actuator. The best and easiest way to do this is to have a small keyboard fitted to the Retropie system and use the 5 key to put in a coin and the 1 key to Start for player 1.
  2. That makes the Raspberry Pi more than capable of playing retro games, and the folks behind the RetroPie project have developed a way to help you do exactly that. Installing RetroPie on your Raspberry Pi will give you the ability to emulate a ton of old video game systems, essentially turning your Raspberry Pi into the ultimate retro gaming machine.
  3. RetroArch uses two types of cheat methods: Emulator Handled and RetroArch Handled. Emulator Handled cheats are passed to and handled entirely by the emulator while RetroArch Handled cheats are applied to the emulator by RetroArch. You can search for cheat codes for a given title or add custom cheat codes that aren't in the database.

I promise this will be a quick article, its about three in the morning, and while I have the great show The Inbetweenerson in the background – I felt I should write about how much I miss cheat codes.

Fun fact James Buckley who plays Jay in The Inbetweeners has his own You Tube channel dedicated to vidya games. Go ahead and check out Completed it Mate.

I’m not a very good gamer – I’m really not. I suck at most games I play, in fact in both Skyrim andFallout 3 I can’t get very far at all without enable the console and typing me some tgm or player.additem. The fact that those options are there however means the world to me, and is the main reason why I hate both of those games on consoles.

Back in the day though most games all had cheat codes. Remember the Konami code?

Amazingly there is a wikipedia page dedicated to the Konami code, how fucking cool is that?

Or perhaps the Mortal Kombat cheats for Game Gear and Sega Genesis or the Mega-Drive if you lived every where else besides America. (2,1,2, down, up and A,B,A,C,A,B,B,A). Sadly the Super Nintendo version I owned did not have such codes (something I’m still bitter about 20 some years later….I need a life or therapy), all thanks to Nintendo’s censorship at the time….putting this on the list for a future post.

Regardless I loved that cheats added a whole new aspect to the game. Some bosses you just could not defeat. I would never have beat the game Contra without the use of the Konami code, and hardware like the Game Genie, Pro Action Replay (which I did not own), and GameShark (which I also owned), where even better. Not only were these great at adding cheat codes to various games, they were essentially ROM hacking in its infancy.

Some games like NBA Jam had cheat codes that allowed you to play as various hidden characters, remember those days? When you could put a cheat code in to play as then president Bill Clinton and First Lady Hilary Clinton without having to beat the game on each difficulty, and earn that trophy?

Fuck it, I do.

Though I almost never play modern games, a big part of that is the lack of cheat codes and fun I would have. As I said above I am not very good at video games, and for games like Skyrim and Fallout I enjoy rocking God Mode and exploring every aspect of the world they created without have to save every three seconds, and reload my games.

So please random developers (or at least you awesome Indie developers) start re-adding cheat codes to your games.
